V-아/어 있다 grammar = 'V-ed/-ing' ~express the continuing state of a completed action.

Usage:
- V-아/어 있다 is used to express the continuing state of a completed action = 'V-ed/ing' in English
- It is often used with passive verbs such as 열리다 (to be opened), 닫히다 (to be closed) 
- In the case of 'to wear = 입다, 신다, ...' verb, V-고 있다 is used

Word conversion:
앉다 -> 앉아 있다 (being sit)
 서다 -> 서 있다 (standing)
피다 -> 피어 있다 (blooming)
잠기다 -> 잠겨 있다 (being locked)

붙다 -> 붙어 있다 (being attached)
열리다 -> 열려 있다 (being opened)
닫히다 -> 닫혀 있다 (being closed)
꺼지다 -> 꺼져 있다 (being turned off)

켜지다 -> 켜져 있다 (being turned on)
쓰이다 -> 쓰여 있다 (being used, written)
*눕다 -> 누워 있다 (laying)
남다 -> 남어 있다 (remaining)




Examples
1. 선생님이 연단 앞에 서 있어요.
The teacher is standing in front of the podium.
2. 학생들이 앉아 있어요.
The students are sitting.
3. 할아버지가  침대에 누워 있어요.
My grandfather is lying in bed.

4. 책에 이름이 쓰여 있어요.
His name is written on the book.
5. 창문이 열려 있어요.
The door is being opened.
6. TV가 켜져 있어요.
The TV is being turned on.

7. 왜 식당에 안 들어가요?
- 문이 닫혀 있어요.
Why don't you go inside the restaurant?
- It's closed.
8. 방을 어떻게 찾았어요?
- 학교 앞에 광고가 붙어 있었어요.
How did you find the room?
- There was an advertisement attached in front of school.
9. 이번 주에는 벚꽃이 예쁘게 피어 있어요.
In this week, cherry blossoms are blooming beautifully.


Differences between V-고 있다 and V-아/어 있다 

V-고 있다 = express an action currently in progress
E.g. 꽃이 피고 있다 = the flowers are in the process of blooming.

V-아/어 있다 = express the continuing state of a completed action
E.g. 꽃이 피어 있다 = the flowers have bloomed and remain in the state.

Usage:
- Express state of wearing or taking off something = be wearing/taking off

Common verbs:
1) 입다
옷/ 코드/ 바지 / 치마/ 원피스를 입고 있다 = wearing clothes/ coat / trouser/ skirt/ dress

2) 쓰다
모자/ 안경을 쓰고 있다 = wear a hat/glasses

3) 매다
넥타이를 매고 있다 =wear a necktie

4) 끼다
반지/장갑을 끼고 있다 = wear a ring/gloves

5) 차다

A-아/어하다 grammar =~turn an adjective into a verb

A-아/어하다 grammar = 'appear to...' or 'seem...' ~turn an adjective into a verb

Usage:
- 아/어하다 turns an adjective into a verb to express the speaker's feeling or observation about some action or outward appearance = 'appears to' or 'seems' in English

Word conversion:

좋다 = good -> 좋아하다 = like
아프다 = hurt -> 아파하다 = have pain in, (someone) feel hurt
배고프다 = hungry -> 배고파하다 = feel hungry

예쁘다 = pretty -> 예뻐하다 = adore, care for, hold dear
피곤하다 = tired -> 피곤해하다 = feel tired
미안하다 = sorry -> 미안해하다 = feel sorry
시원하다 = cool -> 시원해하다 = cool down (=시원하게 하다)

*밉다 = hateful -> 미워하다 = hate
*덥다 = hot -> 더워하다 = feel hot
*무섭다 = afraid -> 무서워하다 = fear, be afraid of
*어렵다 = difficult -> 어려워하다 = feel hard, be uncomfortable
*즐겁다 = joyful -> 즐거워하다 = be amused at





Examples:
1. 아이들이 배고파해요.
The children seem hungry.

A-게 grammar =  '...-ly' or 'in a ... manner' ~turn an adjective into an adverb

Usage:

+ 게 turns an adjective into an adverb = '....-ly' or 'in a .... manner' in English

예쁘다 → 예쁘게

길다 → 갈게

크다 → 크게

가깝다 → 가깝게

깨끗하다 → 깨끗하게

+ In cases of 많다 and 이르다, a different form is used.

*많다 → 많이 (not 많게)

*이르다 → 일찍  (not 이르게)

+ In some other cases, adverbial form -게 and a different form are both used

**빠르다 → 빠르게 / 빨리

**적다 → 적게 / 조금

**느리다 → 느리게/ 천천히

1. 머리를 짧게 잘랐어요.

I cut my hair short.

2. 어젯밤에 집에 늦게 왔어요.

I came home late last night.
